Alvvays. Fun Music, Stupid Name.
Alvvays (pronounced Always) is an a band from Canada. They have picked this spelling of the word Always because they're was already a banded named "Always." So instead of simply picking a new name they chose to make their name confusing and stupid. When I found them I spent a good 5 minutes just staring at the name trying to fidgure out how to pronuce it before I gave up and googled it. Anyway that extreamly spefic grevience aside, the music they make is actually very good. Hailing from Canada they have five members. Led by main vocalist and song writer Molly Rankin the rest of the band conists of Molly's childhood friend and keyboardist Kerri MacLellan, lead guitarist Alec O'Hanely, bassist Brian Murphy, and drumer Sheridan Riley. Typing this out this may be the most Canidan sounding band of all time. They've relseased two albums up to this point: 2014's self-titled Alvvays and 2017's Antisocialites. Both albums are pretty good so lets talk about them.
Self-titled (Alvvays)
Alvvays is a fun album. It is with-out question a modern day indie-pop album. Falling somewhere inbetween the soft pyscadelic rock of Mac Demarco and the echoy dream pop of Beach House, Alvvays has the vibe of what an 80 degree day with light wind. However it would be a mistake to call theses songs, "happy." Many of the songs about heartbreak or some form of morose loneliness. Songs such as Adult Diversion and Those Who Love You may sound bright and happy the lyrics are about the cripling anxitys of being alone in life and mistreating those cloestest too you. This relization gives the bright and happy tone of the songs a whole differnt vibe. That being said the music is still extreamly catchy. Songs such as Archie, Marry Me have extreamly catchy hooks and melodys. Favorite songs: Adult Diversion, Archie Marry me, Ones Who Love You, Next of Kin, Party Police, Atop a Cake. OVERALL SCORE: 8/10 good album!
Antisocialites
Antisocialites is better then the self titled. It simply is better. The songs are mixed better, the songs have a better vibe, the songs have are more complex and layered. It is simply the superior album. Songs like Dream Tonight, Plimsoll Punk, and Lollipop have infection melodies and ear worms for hooks. The song writing is both melancholy and optimistic. In my opinion the perfect example of this is in the song Not My Baby. A song that is about a break-up. It the bitter emotions of the song is contrasted with an upbeat melody and some retro feeling instrumentals. It perfectly encapsulates the mood of not just this album but the bands entire discography. Bitter-sweet songs with extremely catchy grooves that just run up and down the song. The grooves on this album are simply infectious. Best songs: In Undertow, Dream Tonite, Plimsoll Pinks, Your Type, Not My Baby, Hey, Lollipop, Saved By A Waif, Forget About Life. OVERALL SCORE: 9.5/10 great album!
